1. Some of Your Roof Shingles Have Moss Growing On Them
Moss commonly grows on roofs when the conditions are right. Moss likes moist, dark areas, such as those found on rooftops beneath low hanging tree branches. Usually, moss can be noticed growing on roof shingles in small patches. Then, if it continues to thrive, the growth will spread over as much roof as you allow.
The problem is two-fold. The presence of the green moss plant on top of the shingles keeps the shingles from drying out after rain. Secondly, the roots of the plant grow downward, creating wider crevices where rain can seep down and through your roof. If you have moss growing on any of your roof shingles, the odds are high that you have a roof leak.

2. Chimney Bricks are Noticeably Darker
Your chimney is a breach in the roof that is normally sealed with flashing in residential roofing. Sometimes this flashing fails for one reason or another, allowing rainwater and snowmelt to seep down alongside your chimney bricks. Some of the water will be absorbed by the bricks, resulting in that telltale darker brick hue. If you notice that some of your chimney bricks are noticeably darker than surrounding bricks, this is a good indicator that you may have a roof leak.
3. Musty Odor
Mold and mildew always carry with them a detectable musty odor. You may notice it in a certain area in your house, or in an entire room. Either way, this is a common sign that you may have a leak behind one of the walls. What happens is that a roof leak allows water to drip all the way down, even to the first floor. The drywall or studs get wet and begin to rot. If you notice a musty odor in your residential roofing, make sure you get it checked out as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
4. Wallpaper or Paint is Peeling

Water that trickles down from the roof can ultimately collect behind your walls. If you notice that the wallpaper or paint is peeling in a room, it’s possible that the wallboard has become saturated. Over time, this makes the glue less effective, causing wallpaper to peel away from the wall. A similar thing happens with paint if there is a leak in the wall. Paint may peel away from the wall easily, or display small bubbles beneath the surface. If you notice anything like this, there’s a strong chance that you may have a leaky roof.
